We caught up with one of our interns from Harrow International School in Shanghai recently. This student interned with Dr. Sum for around 7 days in the summer and has now gone on to study at Cambridge University. Here's what she had to say:

So what experiences did you manage to gain through your internship?

Interning with Dr Sum was the highlight of my summer holiday. I had the opportunity to sit in patient consultations, during which he prompted me with questions to get me to apply my classroom knowledge of biology and chemistry to a dental environment. I was able to watch doctor-patient interactions first hand which taught me the importance of clear communication in dentistry, and science as a whole. It was also interesting to note the questions he asked the patient and observations he made to reach a conclusive diagnosis.

How do you think it helped your academic development?

To support my academics, he (Dr. Oscar) gave me several research assignments on various topics in dentistry, from bruxism to materials science. After research, we would recap my findings and discuss the topic together. This was a rewarding process in which I learnt more about dentistry, also about science research: critiquing articles and methodologies, determining reputable journals, etc. Overall, I learnt so much during the internship and I am very grateful for the experience.
